Windows 10 has the same stupid UX, they likely learned it there. It also supports hitting Enter, or any other key. I don't know if Ubuntu supports other keys too, I use Xubuntu to avoid these exact pointless changes.

I don't know about Ubuntu but on Windows you can also just click with the mouse to open it, no need to swipe up.
