For my niche use case, I'd love to see this somewhere in the middle of the US so I can have a single instance with similar ping to both coasts.

That is why our primary location is in Denver. No earthquakes, no terrorism, no floods.

rsync.net customers all over California happily keep their backups in boring old Denver ...

(with a one hop route into the he.net core in Fremont ...)

It's not AWS, but you can look at https://www.webhostingtalk.com/ to find dedicated servers in different regions. I have an elasticsearch cluster node in Kanasas City, for example. ( Joe's Datacenter: https://joesdatacenter.com/ )

Seems like Kansas City and Salt Lake City are the major nodes in the middle of the country? I like this Internet2 map because it's simple:

https://noc.net.internet2.edu/

Which would you choose?

Kansas City would be lovely. I rent a server there, but not from AWS. Denver would probably be good too.

Try us-east-2, it's located in Ohio.

I also think of Ohio as being in the middle of the country, so I was surprised to find out that Columbus (where us-east-2 is located) is only about 300 miles from Washington DC, but over 2000 miles from San Francisco.

Most of Ohio is a 6 hour drive from Chicago and 8 hours from NYC. People call it the mid west, but really it's the mid east.

The "west" comes from the perspective of the 13 original colonies. Everything else was called "the west" at one point.

Minneapolis was in the "northwest" until the thirties or later.

Nope, way too far to the east for what I want.

canada-central-1 is also close-ish.

Oddly enough, ca-central-1 is in Montreal... even further east than their Ohio and Virginia data centers.

It seems Central Canada is more philosophical than Geographical.
