It's for that reason that I consider the first one to be the more efficient and 'chaotic' design despite the straight lines. It's optimised for production, repair or replacement in the field using nothing but metal stock, a welder, saw, and a drill, or indeed can be manufactured by hand by a blacksmith. It screams form over function.
