FTR, I think he's guilty (and have from nearly the beginning) but parent is right. These offices are often little hotbeds of spin and manipulation. Public opinion counts in a big way. People get elected, careers advance and names are made by the trials and their outcomes.
I wouldn't take anything heard in the news about this case very seriously until the body actually shows up.
I think he probably did it. But here's an alternative theory: He didn't kill her, but he knows who did and knows where the body is stashed. He's covering for the killer because he's some ultra-powerful russian dude who will murder his children if he talks.
Unlikely, but if we're just making stuff up it's as good as anything else :)
