So by trying to protect their own companies from competition (let's not kid ourselves it is what this is about) in the short term the US might be harming themselves in the medium term.
Huawei has already announced its own 5G chipset so Qualcomm can kiss goodbye to any sales to the 2nd largest handset seller in the world.
Seems more akin to the middle-income trap. An economy is closing/protectionist policies up causing stagnation of its growth. I see brazil, south africa, japan, and even the USSR. Basically galapagosing themselves by making tech companies that only work in china.
