He has spent many years running a successful business in candy arbitrage. It may not be as successful going into the future, but as of the last revenue report he released, it was a reasonably profitable enterprise.
I have no idea why you're using this spiteful tone for someone openly sharing his experience as a YouTube marketing newbie. You also seem to be imputing some views on the author ("assuming that basic economies of scale aren't relevant") that he has not publicly espoused.
Almost everyone who could write software would be better off writing software. That's just the nature of being one the of the highest demand + expected value skillsets out there. That's no reason to be mean about someone who is doing something different.
As for me I just want to let you know that I've signed up. I remember seeing this on youtube before (probably not unboxing, maybe ad at one of the rare moments I don't have adblock?) but kinda forgot about it. This post (interesting read btw) reminded me that I wanted to sign up. So I guess "advertising" on hacker news works as well :)
Anyway, looking forward for the first box!
Have a nice day :)
PS: Someone else here mentioned if part of the stuff could be something beside candy, dunno, could be interesting too.
It may not make sense for you logistically, but while a twice-monthly subscription is too much for me, I would totally order these boxes as one-off gifts for friends and family.
