Forth is for people making little jewels that stand all by themselves, usually (as in the example) to get something (anything) high level running on new hardware.

That's a pretty unique niche. And for that niche it is virtually without competition.

But if you're going to write an accounting system in forth your a masochist, it's not meant for that.

I have no idea really what factors natural habitat is, but possibly over time it will come to supplant forth in this role.

Forth, factor and lisp (or scheme) are amongst the languages that are easiest to bootstrap, that alone gives them a right to exist.
