I grew up in the 90s and 00s and schools were all Apple but homes and businesses were all Windows



Yes, on paper Apple was the future -- kids were learning it at school, and thus would recommend it and require it both at home, and then in the office a decade later.

However Microsoft capitalised on their position in the office, and it was far cheaper to buy a fully functioning computer at home with a copy of windows and office from work. Then schools were under pressure to provide what was normal.

Piracy made windows what it is.
