Vim. It has most of the features one would like (cross platform, windowing, regular expression-based searching and editing, handles most text formats gracefully) and it's reasonably quick. A bit bloated these last few years, though. Between vi, nvi and vim, it's available everywhere.


even for large projects?


Yes. Original vi had some problems with "binary files", long lines and large files, but vim does not.


I have been using Atom since it's clean, fast and has some great plugins. Plus I love GitHub as a company.
