I suppose there's some degree of tech literacy required just to know that you should have a backup. But, honestly, Time Machine is probably the easiest backup system I'm aware of and I run all three major operating systems including running a cloud backup on my desktop Mac.
If I were to point a finger at anyone, it would be Microsoft. (I don't really expect Linux to be drop-dead simple.) On Windows 10, it's still not really "just works" out of the box.
