I am in my fifties with over 30 years programming experience and proficient in 20 languages yet one employer rejected my application because I didn't meet their requirements and they found a better fit.

I have been in the business a while myself. It's a lot of work to stay current (and well-rounded). But, I've had relatively long stints in my career with one big industry change. I'm not sure that years of experience necessarily translates from one company to the next, although a proven track record of adaptability and flexibility is helpful. I've come to rely on networking for job opportunities. Having someone willing to vouch for a candidate made a difference when I was on the hiring side.
