Commodore (Amiga) and Atari (ST) would have destroyed themselves anyway regardless of the competition. Their management teams were just completely incompetent.
Maybe, but since I am playing "what if", it could also happened that in spite of their incompetency, they would survive, because the IBM PC market would not turned out as widespread as it did.
In this alternative world, only IBM would be producing PCs just like Atari and Comodore produced their own products, there wouldn't be OEMs driving costs down and creating comodoty computers.
