I don't think I've ever seen unsupervised learning explained that way. The name is that you are literally not supervising the algorithm, so it is typically not a good future predicting tool.
Now, it can teach you something about your data, but it is then up to you to turn that into something that can let you predict about your data. (So, typically cluster analysis.)
