If all manufacturers collaborated on a single software project, they could reduce duplicated efforts. That would lower costs for all manufacturers.



That is an argument for private collaboration, not for broad open sourcing.


Private collaboration among competitors is usually frowned upon as illegal collusion. Contributions to a public open source project wouldn't face the same issues.
