I just successfully ran `ln -s /mnt/c/Windows/System .` in my home directory in bash.
It didn't pop up any dialogues, but I'm a local admin on my machine so it may be different otherwise. I can create a non-admin account and test it, but it's late and I need to go to bed :-)
