I am imagining a world where a local gateway isn't even needed thanks to Tor's decentralized (and secure) ability to do NAT traversal. You could make your phone the hub.
If IoT accessories connected directly to Tor, you could go through a pairing process once on your phone (via Bluetooth or whatnot), and access the device from anywhere in the world – no hub and no mothership required.
