It's ridiculous that the videos won't play in Chrome.

It's really not at least on Apple's side, Chrome has a long standing bug and they refuse to fix the issue, even though HLS is a Open Standard. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_Live_Streaming

There is a third-party library which works well on Chrome:

Interestingly, HLS works fine on Chrome for Android.

That's because Android itself supports HLS (although barely).
