HN Internships + Potential Interns [gdoc] (docs.google.com)

Between this and the co-founders spreadsheet and the recurring 'Who's hiring?' threads, I think it's about time for a HackerJobs.com or something.

I think job boards are pretty boring ... they seem to be the fallback business plan these days for any site where adsense doesn't make enough...

I agree but it seems clear that HN could use some way of letting its like-minded visitors connect.

pg has built a singular and impressive user base, one which benefits from talking to and meeting each other.

I do agree a traditional jobs board would a lame add-on which would exist orthogonally to the stories/comments. Very soon it would be filled by stale jobs (startups move fast), recruiters and people who come just for the jobs section.

The current method of putting up a job post when it seems to be of most utility works, but just barely.

I just don't know if there's any feature you can add which would not feel like a cheap add-on but rather work within the current user-centric community.

bad idea, it'll get spammed by recruiters and big companies...like all job boards are.

I think the more personal "is anyone looking" is a much better idea.

Seems to me putting a karma requirement on posting, and requiring X up-votes before it gets to the main job page would solve that problem.

And create a new problem of more people trying to game the karma system. I think it's best to leave jobs (no pun intended) out of this place.

Does a site do this? This sounds like a great approach to that sector.

I'm not entirely sure if this is the right approach, but a job site that works as well as job postings on HN is definitely in demand

We could make it like doostang, so you need to have somebody invite you in order to make an account

The "is anyone looking" approach doesn't work well here. Unlike regular forum threads, HN posts will disappear from the front page very quickly even if people are still replying to it.

Maybe someone can solve that hard problem while they're at it?

Leverage whatever's keeping HN relatively spam-free.

You could charge companies $350 per posting and $1000/month to search CVs and finance HN like this. Applicants would be rated by karma, and employers by the 'PG test', which would check whether they use Lisp, have source control, etc. It's a proven model!

Or we can start a company and have have YC invest in it :D

Not HackerJobs, but perhaps http://job4dev.com/jobs ?

Free to post listings, as long as the there is information about the company that is hiring. People can browse companies and listings by tags. Just put a "ycombinator" or "startup" tag there, and I'll approve it quickly.

Users that would like to get more details before applying can do so by registering and letting a comment on the listing page.

... you wouldn't happen to work on that, by any chance?

I do. What other disclaimer besides "I'll approve it quickly" would be needed?

Hmm, would anyone object to another 'who's hiring' thread right now? It's been about 2.5 months since the last one ...

It seems like no one is objecting, although I thought it was going to happen once every 3 months

I'll stick with tradition and wait a few more weeks then ;-)

Isn't that called Startuply.com?

I took all the information from this thread: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1089829

I can help put it in spreadsheet form ?

knock yourself out :)

I get that YCombinator is based in Mountain View, but it's amazing to see just how many (~10) are in and around that area.

Personally, I'm on the hunt for London-based start-ups so I'll probably think about contacting one of the three that were posted.

My startup is based in London so if you want to do something really high risk (and possibly rewarding) feel free to drop me a line - e-mail in profile.

By the way, Richard Revis(not sure if that's you) gave a fantastic talk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=os1NevFafNA) about the neat stuff you can do with JS (http://theplanis.com/clouds/) the other day at my university.

That is me, and thanks very much for the mention :-) I didn't realize it had gone onto youtube yet.

It's fairly depressing counting the number of times I say um. Something to improve rapidly.

(Incidentally I'm still looking for places to talk about this - or project management - in Atlanta or California in Feb.)

This is really awesome! I'm still yet to see anybody from either side (seeking work or seeking workers) from New Zealand though... Are you out there!?!?

I'm based in Christchurch and also able to work remotely.

I'm available for Django/Python/JS and Arduino/Physical Computing/Interaction Design contracting.

TweetZombie http://tweetzombie.rancidbacon.com/ is a recent personal project I worked on with Django/Google App Engine/Twitter API.

I also maintain Planet NZTech http://planet.nztech.org/ which you might want to check out. I'm also a co-founder of Spacecraft the Christchurch Creative/Hacker Space http://spacecraft.org.nz/

Also, as a Kiwi I hate tooting my own horn, I'm trying to get over that. :)

whereabouts in New Zealand are you? In Wellington there's been a pretty successful "Summer of Code" program run for the past few years, placing interns with startups (nothing to do with Google). I've been part of it both as a student and later as an employer, it's a great opportunity for both sides of the fence.

There seem to be a lot of conferences in NZ, and my friends tell me that there are plenty of jobs to be found.

I wish someone (or I) had posted something like this when I was looking for an internship couple of years back...

Regarding the HN job postings, Can't we have a quarterly "Who's hiring" thread as a permanent fixture. A quarter seems like a good enough time for a company(even a startup) to look/plan ahead for hiring decisions.

Could always just extend the current jobs board for YC companies. I think the community would be effective in up voting real opportunities and flagging spam.
