I know it's not usually cool to post your own articles and all, but I started to write a response to this discussion and it turned into its own article.
I've self posted a number of times and I've yet to see a post saying "hey, dont self post"; sometimes they flopped, sometimes they did really well. No one complained :)
Indeed the guidelines actually encourages some types of self posting: if you want to add initial commentary on the link, write a blog post about it and submit that instead.
(and indeed this very submission seems to meet those guidelines exactly :D)
It's funny that the discussion on the article kicked off a whole other topic. I was really just trying leave a comment that provided a link to the discussion of the original post. But it's nice hear everyone's thoughts on this. It just goes to show the higher overall maturity level of HN compared to other communities.
Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.
