If I want to use twitter-the-thing, I have to use twitter.com-the-service. No other service offers decent twitter. There is gnusocial.de and quitter.se, but their twitter is not as feature rich as twitter.com's twitter, and also twitter.com refuses to federate with their accounts. That means you have no access to twitter.com's biggest asset, their user base, which is pretty rude if you ask me.
Just like I use google and several other services that are simply too big now to get around. I used twitter from long before they closed their offering and I'm still pissed off about it. Use an open policy to attract developers then close as soon as you have achieved critical mass is a very very nasty strategy.
