You: Use Twitter

Them: I don't want to, I hate it, it's bullshit just broadcasting stuff in 140 characters!

You: Do you use Facebook?

Them: Yes.

You: Do you use IM/IRC?

Them: Yeah.

You: Do you send out emails?

Them: Of course I do!

You: Use Twitter at least 10 updates+10 follows everyday for 30 days, tell me why it sucks after that.

(( after 30 days ))

crickets

No wonder we're experiencing a brain drain, and the articles about US Immigrations usually feature a smart Indian trying to live his dream.

Melbourne, Australia

Hey, me too!

me three

me also and am looking for a startup co-founder.

Hacking in scheme on a web- data- related prototype as outlined on quantblog.wordpress.com.

Count me in as #5.

Frequent reader, less frequent poster and #6 from Melbourne (Geelong to be exact!)

Just got back from Melbourne, (Toronto, ON), loved it and will return, and I just kept thinking 'If there was a start-up culture in Melbourne, I'd move there in 2 seconds!' - and now there are 6 responding to the thread, :)

'If there was a start-up culture in Melbourne, I'd move there in 2 seconds!'

Whilst it's not huge, it's certainly growing. Silicon Beach is a community pushing technology innovation in Melbourne (and the rest of Australia). You can read a little more about it here: http://melbourne.siliconbeachaustralia.org/about-2/ and here: http://www.rosshill.com.au/article/silicon-beach-melbourne/

Count me in as well. Good to see some people here I know on Twitter, but wasn't aware of on HN.

Melbourne / Geelong here too! I was impressed when I put the SB blog post above together too. There is a nice range of events happening, and a good amount of code happening too :)

I am surprised to see such a strong Melbournian contingent. Maybe the rain keeps you indoors, nothing to do but program? ;)

Sydney here, although going back to Tokyo for summer. (Reference for Melbourne residents: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summer)

Speaking of Melbourne, how's the weather? Nevermind I'll ask again in 5 minutes when it has changed!

Perth, Australia here.

Another for Perth

Perth as well!

Brisbane, Australia.

I'm in SF, but my sister lives on the Bellarine Peninsula. I've spent about 6 weeks in Australia and love it. If anyone has info about startups hiring in Melbourne or Geelong I'd love to hear about them.

You're in SF and you want to move to Melbourne for a startup? That's the inverse of what I always hear about... ;)

I've been here doing startup type work for ages. Wouldn't mind spending some time down under.

Ditto.

I know in Melbourne, Monash University has a sort of similar service, but they call it an "incubator" though. http://www.monashincubator.com.au/Content/Pub/ContentDetail....

I think it's making a profit, it's packed!

I don't know about most of them, but since Twitter is gaining more people with each passing day, a lot of website marketplaces have buyers interested in URL shortening services. Maybe they want to put ads on it, maybe Affiliate stuff, but selling your service is definitely a money maker.

Never knew recessions are indicated using Joel Spolsky's product sales.

From the article:

"OK, it’s just one data point. All I know is sales of FogBugz and Copilot."

"This could be a fluke; it might not reflect any reality."

I think it's very informative for them to share (relative) sales numbers like this.

I think it's the safety filter feature from Chrome that they're implementing site-wide, gone wrong.

Zack and Miri make a porno

Seriously, they're broke, they bootstrap and they make the porn, and it's really entertaining.

Monash University

Yes, but maybe there's a guy just as equally smart and hard working in a developing nation and he's getting peanuts even though his government doesn't provide him with health care or education or social security. Voted up.
