Nawh, it was Aldous Huxley. I could hear the wailing from here drowning out my downstairs neighbor's 2 inappropriate-breed-for-apartments yapping and howling dogs.
Capitalism is well suitable to people at their current level, which is about developing a strong ego with intelligence and clear boundaries. Communism was appropriate in the past, when people had weak notion of self, is not appropriate now, and will be appropriate in the future when people want to give more and take less. "I think my nature was always one that strove to yield itself to the great whole of which it was such a small part - and by yielding itself, to draw back into it the sustenance of life." - a pretty good allegory on the essense of communism done right.
Given that all of recorded history has taken place in the last 10500 years, and that time has seen a huge diversity of social structures in civilizations across the globe, I think your pessimism is unfounded.
Yes, people are selfish. People also have a great capacity for cooperation and altruism, given sufficient cause to bind them together.
I rather hope that the impending collapse of the biosphere that sustains all life is just such a cause. Then again, we appear to be setting the world on fire at an ever greater pace.
This sort of flamewar comment is unacceptable on HN, and I'm afraid you've posted like this in the past as well. Would you please review https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html and stop doing that on HN?
Her argument just shows how entrenched sexism runs in our society.
Anecdotal evidence/sample size one story:
My wife has a doctorate in chemistry and 2 postdocs under her belt, but she had to leave her field purely due to sexism she encountered during her post docs. The PI (her boss) was quite abusive, outright sexist and a horrible racist. My wife wanted to move on to industry jobs but her wouldn't let her leave. So he kept giving bad references. We didn't know about this until after my wife looked into why she got rejected.
I wonder if this is unchecked laissez faire capitalism at work? Nobody wants to fly on Boeing 737 Max anymore but this has cost hundreds of lives to get to this point.
There was definitely regulatory capture which led to lax FAA oversight, though. Maybe a free-market fundamentalist would argue that they would have done better if they weren't dragged down by all that red tape, but it suggests to me that a looser regulatory environment was more dangerous.
I am an Iranian (Technically West Asian) and I can totally relate to this article!
What I find challenging in yogurt making g is to keep the yogurt culture from drifting and in its original state. After a while my culture becomes more acidic and less thick. I think its due to other local bacteria invading my culture, which I try to keep pure by sanitizing anything that comes in contact with it. I find it surprising that it is not an issue for most people in the article.
