Just yesterday I installed ConnectBot from F-Droid (free software) to access my laptop via SSH. It works just as fine as the other app. bought from the Play Store.
This is just not true. I've been using my banking apps succesfully since last year across 3 rooted cheap phones with 4 distinct custom LineageOS ROMs with just some Magisk modules.
This has been my experience as well using a degoogled ROM for the first time. I feel I got so much time back. Now I'm really using my phone and not the other way around.
I prefer Session for messaging and for family I ask them to reach me on Telegram FOSS.

This is so true. Typing this on a Mi A2 Lite released in 2018 rocking a custom A11 ungoogled ROM and squeezing almost 3 days of battery life out of it. It's screen size is 5.84" and it's perfect. I refuse to go any bigger.
