πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅ Cool

πŸ›Ά as Terrance McKenna said β€œBuild your own damn boat.”

I may be doing it wrong but the lack of IME (Japanese) Input support and the refusal of the author to support it is quite sad and makes it a non-starter for me and I assume many others

I literally just compiled 4.20.11 for Slackware. I swear these things are popping up more often. Or more likely since spectre I've just been paying more attention

More people are fuzzing the kernel publicly, and with better tools.

syzkaller.appspot.com should give you an idea how many THOUSANDS of these types of bugs exist in the current ToT kernel

What is ToT? I’ve found that term mentioned several times on the Chromium bug tracker but no definition.

Tip of Tree / Top of Tree. I.e present as of the most recent commit on the main development branch.

TOT = Tip of Tree.

Yup. Kind of has my mind racing. And practically speaking, at that point, it feels like I need to employ a similar aggressive approach similar to our application. Go faster, and accept pain on the outer layer.

Maybe the answer is to do a daily automated recompilation of the kernel, rebuild of the edge LB and FW images followed by automated, staged rollout and rollback. If we're vulnerable anyway, let's just pick up the fixes from yesterday at least and roll back if things go wrong. That sounds really scary, but doable.

They still haven't separated the USB/Ethernet Bus :/

This is also possible with the Orange Pi/NanoPi boards which have actual Ethernet that doesn't go over USB, though I don't think there's such a good writeup of how to do that.

This would be a perfect case for a NanoPi Neo. [1] It's designed to be ultra-tiny and run headless. It's also $13. I find FriendlyElec's board better designed and supported than Orange by a bit and miles above the Banana folks.

running the docker over ssh got me "Failed to connect to Firefox's Marionette within 30 seconds"

If you leave an issue on the Github repo with some debug logs and some info about the server I can look into it.

Using google voice and hangouts connected I have a libpurple connection for hangouts in Bitlbee. I can send SMS through that connected interface via voice/hangouts. Works well for me (especially when in China on business) I also live in Japan and travel to EU about once a month. Keeping in touch with my family/friends in US via my one phone number I've had since google voice launched is quite useful...

Please port explorer as well from windowz 2000....

Yes please.

Or actually, fuck it, just recompile Windows 2000 for AMD64, delete the Windows 10 source tree, and call it a day.

While I think Windows 2000 without a doubt was the best version of Windows available for a good while...

Does anyone remember its missing WiFi-support? It’s almost non-existent USB2-support? It’s absolutely atrocious boot-times (even compared to NT4, especially compared to Windows 98)? Made even more painful by its absolute rebootey-ness after updates?

There’s lots of warts here your memory is probably glossing over.

I’m pretty sure if I were to ditch Win 10 now and go for a Windows reboot, I’d base it on the technologically much improved Win 7.

I used Windows 2000 in a VM about a month ago so my memory is fresh. The warts are real, of course, but I was struck by how cohesive, clean and friendly it was compared to every Windows version since. It still feels like peak Windows to me. Once they merged and consumerified NT, it was all downhill from there.

Windows 2000 just gets out of your way and works. It's such a refreshing feeling in 2018 using computer software that doesn't try to sell you anything or steal your data.

You are right about the boot times but on a modern-ish system with an SSD, it's no big deal. And obviously, if you were to do this, you would also backport support for newer hardware like Wifi, USB2 and 3 ;)

I don't miss a lot of UI things from newer Windows, either. I do like being able to hit the Windows key and start typing to find stuff. Also, being able to snap windows to the left half/right half of the screen.

So the ideal Windows would be Windows 2000 with the hardware support and selected UI improvements of Windows 7 :)

Don't forget the registry key that you had to set to make it not corrupt disks larger than 128gb. Why anyone thought "corrupt my disk" was a sensible default I will never know.

Compiled on Windows subsystem for Linux and then ran on win10... what a strange world...

The best part is how WSL is installed from the UWP app store.

Pretty impressive. Any chance of tying it to IRSSI or making an IRC gateway like bitlbee? I connect to almost all those services through bitlbee already and it works pretty well. Add Naver Line support as well and I'm sold..

IRC is supported, so you can use bitlbee with eul.

Line messenger is not supported, but eul is modular, and everyone will be able to add support of custom messengers in the future as long as they have an open API (which Line seems to have).
