The article has two Em dashes in the first paragraph. I believe haven't noticed the double hyphen anywhere. I know some word processors turn `--` to En dash and `---` to Em dash, so it might be a mix-up there.

Can't find any in the NYT today, but here's one from CNN: https://lite.cnn.com/en/article/h_ff31bbc01931e2dcb21eea5d2b...

Their full site uses an en dash: https://www.cnn.com/2022/04/29/us/texas-migrant-arrest-progr...

I'd be aghast if a double hyphen was the house style for a major news outlet.

Does it? I definitely see a double-hyphen at this link.

People seem to always be impressed with close-up images of plants.

Humans can learn a lot from observing the world around them. We do this a lot as kids. So maybe seeing up-close details we either can't see with the naked eye or never payed attention before can be interesting. At least to me, it feels to add completeness to my observation of what nature is capable of, and this enhances my conception of how much I was missing and it is now "complete" to me.

Agree with this.

My children are so close to the ground they can observe things I just walk by. They are constantly pointing out to me things they find beautiful in their tiny details. Admittedly I've trained them to be highly observant but they've outdone me in a short time.

Sounds promising. How realistic is the depth target of 20km really? Also, I would assume this infrastructure will be less applicable in locations with frequent earthquakes.

Considering that the current deepest borehole in the world is 12km [1], 20km is a lofty goal.

> The deepest reached 12,262 meters (40,230 ft) in 1989

Hopefully those 30 years of technology will be of service

That's all well but I actually preferred the previous style of the MDN Docs website.
