Who is Simon Holywell and wtf do I care what they think about SQL formatting?

The obsession with portabilty is a red herring.

Are you writing C code that's portable to Java, C++ an C#?

No that would be stupid. Same here. Any heavy loaded, heavily used db is going toneed optimization sober or later.

The In vs Or is dumb bc ORs blow up query plans and your better off with unions instead.

What's the user case here?

I'm my various travels in I/O landed in windows meory mapped files have never been worth the hassle for my (fairly typical) workloads.

Would love to know when this approach is actually "better" for some definition of better.

Digging around the site it appears that graphics and games are the use case.

It's also great on iPad with a stylus.

You can set it to use retina resolution. Some mods even work. Better trading screen, etc.

It's kind of amazing.

WinForms is the easiest gui platform I've ever used.

Still supported in .net 8. Windows only though.

Beyond that, I have not bothered.

Anyone know why the hardcover isn’t available until April 2025?

I was super excited to read this book but I hate buying kindle books as it’s easier to share real books.

What do you mean? Amazon has the hardcover listed for sale.

It available from Amazon UK and they will ship it to the US.

I have already bought hardcover on Amazon India

“probably not even in Tulsa or Little Rock”

Say what? Are these places known for cheap labor or is this a snide comment?

Literally looked up cheapest metros. Not a snide comment.

Exactly. Is this the world we want to live in?

Doesn’t anthropic have disability insurance? Why are you still expected to be writing code with a broken hand?

Maybe given the choice of claiming disability and not working vs experimenting with new ways of working, OP chose the latter.

If so, would it be a case of letting yourself being exploited by the uncaring business? Or would it be a fair and productive desire to contribute?

Do you live in Europe?
