I don't understand the criticism of the comments at all.
Most common use case is commuting to work with averages of 1h drive and 40 miles. With a potential of 8 hours of light while at work that sounds to me like it would make up for any drag it adds for that short commuting drive.
Cactus isn't really the fediverse though: I consider (maybe mistakenly) the so-called fediverse to be broadly activitypub-based, while cactus leverages Matrix.
Can someone tell me why this is being downvoted? Confession of a strongly held false believe and updating on evidence saying otherwise is a good thing, isn't it? Downvoting that seems weird to me.
Probably because he led with "That's slightly annoying." At a quick glance, it looks like he's annoyed that Facebook is doing well (which would just be petty and deserving of a downvote) as opposed to annoyed with himself for holding an incorrect belief so strongly.

I think most handheld navigation aids infer direction of travel from position information. An electronic compass gives the orientation of the device, who knows how it is being held.
I guess they use a compass when it's available, like for trying to display a map oriented to compass north, but I don't think it is dependable as algorithmic input.
Something mounted in a vehicle can directly factor the compass data into directions though (just saying that to emphasize that I'm talking about handheld stuff above).
