Daemon And FreedomTM might be one of the best near future sci-fi pairings. I read them back in 2011ish timeframe and within a couple of years multiple things had some true from those books.

If you liked REAMDE you'll definitely like Daemon and Freedom, they also have that near-future feel that connects well to the tech we're seeing today.

make all the corn fields back into grasslands that they were and the cows will help rebuild the soil.

Should we be worried about how many more ruminants this would require, and their impact on the climate? I just saw some estimates of 90 million acres used to grow corn in the U.S., and a cow calf pair needs 1.5-2 acres to feed itself. I know we probably wouldn't maximize cows to the area for the type of growing we're talking about, but that's 45 million cows (with calfs) at the low end if we were, and I'm seeing reports we currently have ~95 million head of cattle in the U.S.

Those are all napkin numbers, or poorly sourced, and worst case, but I would love to see some good numbers on what it means to the climate to have a lot more ruminants in the farming process. (If much of current beef cattle production was moved to be dispersed along these lands, that seems like it might be a good idea for all involved though).

I think these numbers are from the more traditional way of farming.

At least one practitioner of regenerative agriculture, Gabe Brown, uses super dense grazing and frequent movement of the cattle to actually restore his soil health.

If this sort of stuff interest you, I highly suggest his book, Dirt To Soil. It’s a light read with a lot of great information on regen ag.

With 401k, healthcare, I have heard that a million bucks gets you 3 engineers. Or in the case of layoffs you get a million dollars worth of savings per year per 3 engineers laid off.

Yea, I guess if you are throwing healthcare etc in as well it can add up - and I guess US insurance costs are on the high end

That would mean Starship right? Because the Falcon second stage is never going to land.

What is the over/under for Starship landing regularly? 5 years?

Landing intact, or landing like the last starship model just did a few weeks ago?

Alastair Reynolds is just amazing to me.

As a side note, I absolutely love the intro The Expanse show because of the all the orbital mechanics.

> Alastair Reynolds is just amazing to me.

His earlier stuff, definitely yes (eg The Inhibitor series).

His more recent works (eg Revenger series) is pretty average if not outright bad.

I'm on the third book of the Revenger series now, and it's just... crap. :(

If you haven't read it yet, avoid it. Major foundation sections of the third books' plot are completely nonsensical, the characters do outright idiotic things to move the plot along, etc. It's not good reading. :(

Honestly that’s how I felt about Redemption Ark and Absolution Gap too. His writing got bad when he was just tying up loose ends towards the end.

Loved Revelation Space, Chasm City, and all the short stories in that universe though. Diamond Dogs is one of my favorite novellas.

I think the Revenger series is intended to be more Young Adult level stuff. The Revelation Space series has a lot of good stuff, but also takes pains to not overly explain every tech advance. Diamond Dogs is my all time favorite, even if it's absurd.

Revelation Space was amazing as were some of the short stories. I just wish they weren't all so pessemistic. I loved the demarchists and the conjoiners.

I think it is better to say that there will be no broad based national inflation of the dollar. Cars, homes, stocks will definitely be inflated.

Netflix - created in 1997 with profit from selling Reed Hasting previous company. They IPOed 5 years later in 2002 don't see anything about VC money. Could be some but definitely not the Softbank model back then.
