FBI is shooting itself in the foot with these sort of policies. I can understand not wanting to hire someone smoking weed on the way to an interview, but in your spare time? What about all the law enforcement staff who abuse alcohol? Alcohol's been proven to be a more dangerous substance but Congress and the scheduling system are still opposite of the data.

They act like hiring those who occasionally partake in cannabis is somehow the equivalent of the army laxing physical requirements to enlist.

Well it's against the (Federal) law, right? And it's your job to enforce the law. Pot bans may not make sense, but it's tricky if you start openly ignoring a law. I mean it's not like they get people's personal data without a warrant or anything. :)

They have moral requirements. Pot is made by criminal enterprises and by purchasing it you're supporting them.

So take it off the banned list. Legalize it. Take the power & profits away from the criminal element. Stop wasting money sending otherwise perfectly normal people to prison for years for having a god damn plant. The whole reason cannabis is on the list in the first place is because Harry J Anslinger was a racist prick.

Ain't nobody hurting you by smoking pot. How many people drink every day and kill innocent people in car crashes? Nobody is OD'ing on pot either, given that it's physically impossible. Nobody is out committing robberies to get money to buy pot. More people have been killed by Uber's robot cars than will ever be killed by smoking pot on their couch at home.

In case you didn't know, the FBI has zero legislative power... They have absolutely nothing to do with legalization of anything, and a law enforcement branch that picks and chooses which laws it enforces is a breath away from a police state.

So, get off your high horse, leave the poor feds alone, and start leading rallies against the real bad guys in Congress.

Where did I suggest that the FBI do anything? But I wouldn't go so far as to think of them as the "poor Feds"

No argument from me on the people in Congress, they forgot that they're supposed to work for the people long ago. but I'm afraid that I don't think it will matter who is in there, if I'm being honest about it. You're not going to get a room full of a bunch of old rich white people to agree on anything #1, but the real problem is money. I hate to use a sound byte from the talking heads on a 24 hr cable news channel, but we really do 'need to get the money out of politics' -- anything short of that is pissing in the wind.

Damn I want some of whatever you've been smoking.

What I always wonder is why strive for productivity at all? I see all these self-help blog posts about boosting productivity, getting more out of your day, etc. They all seem to eschew the virtues of productivity in lieu of hedonism. Can't we have both? Or is the problem moderation? If we don't balance productivity with enjoyment and relaxation we oscillate from each extreme. I confess I've been a bit obsessed with self-help books and websites. With that said, when I compare my more productive self to my time-wasting, hedonistic side, I prefer to have a mix of both. Striving for the extreme hacks to maximize time to be more productive seem pointless if you aren't having fun or enjoying yourself. Strive for achievement sure, but also enjoy life.

If increasing my productivity doesn't increase my salary, but decreases my happiness, then why indeed?

This is an interesting idea. (Office Space interview with the "Bobs" comes to mind) Would you say that your experience fits with the idea that many people are more productive because of recognition from their manager/boss is more valuable than money? (within reasonable parameters)

F&#k recognition. That whole thing is just a brainhack scam by management types to avoid paying people for the monetary value they produce.

People generally crave social validation, but very few will pay for it. Yet, that is exactly what that proposal entails: reduced salary in exchange for (forced/insincere) validation and recognition by management. The only difference is that the latter is the passive choice.

The only reason I thought to ask was data presented years ago that said people will only be motivated by money so far... But would you work in a place for lots of money where they treated you poorly?

I generally agree that corporate head-honchoes will bilk anyone they can for every penny they can...

I don't disagree.

The key is understanding your own long term and legacy goals. Then you can estimate whether your current productivity will get you there.

If you aren’t clear on what it is you want, you’ll always be caught feeling unsure if you’re doing enough.

That is so true. Much of my anxiety stems from being unsure of my personal wants and not being able to separate other people’s wants from my own.

Well said.

Being a better husband and father are things I strive to do better at. I'd classify this as an issue of "productivity", (ie, getting things done that benefit them) even if it's something like giving a compliment or being patient.

For some of us productivity is needed to be able to do the leisure activities we really want. If that's not the case then sure, just skip straight to the leisure.

You may be able to find the Ikea Jerker on craigslist or other classifieds. I got mine from a college student for relatively cheap, I think around $40 or $60. It works great as a standing desk but you don't have any motorized mechanism to lower or lift the desk. This is probably a good thing if you are trying to stand but an alternative solution is getting a high-rise stool/seat. I alternate between standing and sitting now.

I just got one of these[1] and I'm loving it. My wife laughed hard when I ordered it, but after testing it out she was practically cooing.

It's $100 and it's almost perfect - the one thing I may do is add an angled footrest. But I'm not in a big rush.

Thanks for this write up. I didn't know about enumerate. I never thought of swapping variables as in example 4 either.

I noticed one small mistake in section 9:

  d[keys] = values[i]
Should be:

  d[key] = values[i]

For a good few months I was doing

    for i in range(len(input_list)):
        v = input_list[i]
        ...do something with v and i...
enumerate is much nicer!

    for i, v in enumerate(input_list):
        ...

This is stupid. The article claims the term gamer itself isn't appropriate but the examples it provides are wrong. People who enjoy films may often be called film buffs or even more generically movie goers. People who enjoy reading may be referred to as book worms. Deciding to reject them doesn't really mean anything. The term gamer is not the problem.

If this article was more about rejecting sexist and racist language and behavior in gaming I'd agree with it. However I think these problems are more a factor of age and maturity than anything else. Play in a gaming community where the average age is 20+ and you'll find a more tolerable environment.

I was just reading an article yesterday stating that Windows 7 had twice the growth rate in market share of Windows 8. Pretty dumb of Microsoft to alienate their customers but I suppose its nothing new.

This is exactly like 99 Gamers, which is also free. It was started about a year ago too, according to the original launch post on reddit. I recently started using it to get rid of Xbox games collecting dust. The experience has been painless and is an excellent way to try out other games.

Interesting to see there are other video game trading websites out there.

I never actually tried their warehouse fulfillment service but I swear by Amazon for selling used gadgets. Amazon gets a lot of traffic from consumers making it a great way to sell something quickly. I remember listing an used Android phone that was maybe two year old technology at that point. I went to list it and within a few hours someone snagged it at like $90. The only other route I've ever tried is Craigslist, which has worked out pretty well too. Asking for the same price you can usually have someone pick up the item locally and get every cent you are asking for if you're reasonable. I always price things about 20% more than I think I will sell through CL.

This seems kind of absurd. What are they doing, looking at an IP block belonging to the DoD and then laying claim that the DoD doesn't know their geography because a couple of people on their network did their quiz incorrectly? Give me a break.

Actually Sierra published the original Half-life game but didn't help develop it or Counter-Strike. CS was created by Gooseman (Minh Lee) and is arguably the most popular Half-Life mod ever. I played that game for thousands of hours too starting back in middle school.

Ah right, it was published by Sierra. What a work of art for Gooseman.

Thinking about it brings back those nostalgic days of WON with the fullscreen console. I had a 3 digit wonid, I remember when that was such a big deal, lol. Going over to a friend's house, setting up PCs, getting loads of caffeine and raiding the liquor cabinet, then doing cal scrims all night long.
