I don’t think I have ever read something as wholesome as this in the opinion section of the NY Times. I’m guessing that is it heavily aspirational rather than based on data but it paints a very sweet portrait.
The one service I have that works this way is AT&T mobile International Calling and Data. I pay $10 USD for any day that I use the service outside the US and Canada. It is always “on” so I don’t have to worry about enabling it before trips or canceling it when trips end.
I agree it would be great if more services were like this.
This is a tangent, but I would bet that your AT&T service also covers Mexico without the $10/day fee. My wife's does, as does my Verizon. Note: AT&T didn't have a partner in Morocco on the $10/day plan when I was there in 2019, but VZW did. Do check which countries are covered.
Ah yes it does. Which I guess is another benefit of this setup. I don’t need to know which countries are included with the base plan as they only charge extra for the countries that aren’t
Wirecutter is definitely hit and miss but I will say that their upgrade pick for towels (Riley Home) are phenomenal and have held up to everyday use for 3 years and counting:
It’s a little sad, though, that it’s now impressive for a towel to last 3 years. The ones my parents bought in 1986 are still in my rotation for everyday use and holding up better than the set I bought (not cheaply) in 2010, which are starting to look like they need replacement.
Too funny, was just talking about this with my parents. My mom has bathroom towels she bought in 1988 that are still used every day. They're a little faded, but they look great and feel great. I think they're from Ralph Lauren. Same with their bed sheets that show no signs of failure after decades of use. They've had the same comforter since I was 5 years old.
Meanwhile we've gone through Parachute, Brooklinen, some sheets and towels from Macy's, and nothing seems to last.
I don't know enough about the brands they sell, but thinking we might buy from here next: https://linensociety.com/
Our company also closes this week. The best thing about it is that you get back and Slack hasn’t piled up in your absence so it’s as close to a true break as you can get.
I have to think about this sometimes. I worked in the feds a while ago, and the whole Federal Gov gets Christmas Holidays (Day, NY) (plus, usually you've got so much comp time [hour overtime -> hour comp time] built up anyways, the rest is paid.) And "In Lieu of" Holidays (if you miss the exact holiday). A lot of the time the President would usually also grant a half day or day extra (Christmas Eve).
I didn't think it was all that incredible at the time, yet 11 yearly paid holidays, really easy to earn comp. time, and kind of silly layers of special pay when you work tough shifts (working Sunday + Night Shift + Overtime + Holiday? A few special modifiers...) is really pretty incredible compared to some places.
Also, weird to see that Slack has just turned into the new email. "Should I even worry about my messages, or just let em pile up?"
I have high hopes for Mazda to produce lightweight EVs that actually feel good to drive, but right now they just have (had) the MX-30, and that was by all accounts the worst EV on the market. They have a lot of work to do.
The problem is once you follow that prime directive, there really is not much to talk about. I also used to follow various FIRE subreddits but got bored for the same reason.
+1 been an active user/contributer for 10+ years now. The beauty of the forum is that it engages to the extent you are comfortable with. But yeah, no religious, political and crypto talk allowed :-)
Nice idea! Does it play through the user’s logged-in account? Or in other words, will it use my YouTube Premium account to play the videos without ads?
that part is interestingly solved by youtube i guess. it actually does not play through user's account. but i also have premium, and never saw any ads. but must watch more i guess..
