I work there, and am on the Disney Open Source Committee!

We also just open sourced a hybrid public/private blockchain platform "Dragonchain" with some interesting features.

https://github.com/dragonchain/dragonchain

Architecture document: https://dragonchain.github.io/doc/DragonchainArchitecture.pd...

Code is newly released, and rough around the edges. We're working to get the docs up to par and some Docker containers ready for ease of use. Feedback is welcome.

What do you actually use Dragonchain for within Disney? Why does Disney need a blockchain platform?

I'm also curious to know the use case and am reminded of the "Do you need a blockchain?" flowcharts [1][2]

Disney probably doesn't need a blockchain, but they do a fair bit of research. Considering Disney already has a relationship with its customers, a centralized system works best. In fact, this is what they're doing now with their wristband payment/identity system. Considering they just invested $1bn into this, I suspect they're going to be using it for quite some time.

Just tossing out wild guesses/ideas: Theme parks maybe? Or tracking/trading movie ownership? Contracts? Points systems for games?

Most of those don't seem to benefit from block chain style decentralization (where you still need to talk to the network).

Disney Dollars possibly.

While Disney Dollars are no longer produced, I can see them used in other ways. If you haven't been to Walt Disney World (not Disneyland) in the last 2-3 years then you might not know about their MagicBands. They are a RFID wrist band that you basically use it for everything. To get on the Magical Express from MCO, check in at resort, open your room door, park admission, fastpasses, dining reservations, dining plan information, gift shop purchases, etc.

Ya'll should release the source code along with those awesome SIGGRAPH papers every year!

Edit: Hyperion renderer would be the bees knees too.

Seems to be mostly a rebranding of the Pixar opn source page? Consolidation with other Disney software is great. Hope to see more, and especially usecases or how Disney use it... And allow for outside contribs to do the same.

Thank you - fixed. Just deployed the Org side github pages and missed that.

i saw this as a little kid with my dad as a slide show at a planetarium...(omnisphere in wichita, ks)

as a kid, it was ok, but slightly boring until the very end, when after minutes of complete darkness very bright lights came and the planetarium stars went spinning ... it made the whole room seem to spin.

i remembered it all that time, but could never discover who wrote it...

so, thanks.

fuck you MIT! fuck you, fuck you, fuck you.

Given that eloquent pair of sentences, I must ask: what do you know about MIT?

well, in this case, enough to know that the organization should suffer shame.

so, i do apologize if i upset you, and didn't intend to speak to _everyone_ associated with the organization.

in other cases, i would admit that beautiful and wonderful things have come from _individuals_ at MIT...but that is not the context within which my eloquent pair of sentences were made.

however, in this case, it seems that academic snobbery and/or greed was a contributing factor to the suicide of a great individual, and that is enough for me to make my comment.

:)

a second reason, because it's iOS.

the more I learn about daus, and the people that hate him, the more _i_ like him...

Could you explain a bit more? I am curious to hear your opinion.

post jobs apple committee rule combined with their litigious policies towards android are the reason that I'm never giving any money to them again...(and I used to drop a lot of money their way)

or, the most important 3 things about product development: customer, customer, customer

great... however, a more direct example would be mickey mouse...

Not necessarily. We all understand that Mickey Mouse is owned by Disney. It could be counterintuitive for people who don't often think about copyright to support the idea that Mickey Mouse could be owned by the public, rather than Disney.

The Frost poem was a helpful example.

Mickey Mouse is also a trademark of Disney. Using Mickey as an example would confuse the issue.

This is important to note every time someone brings up Mickey Mouse. The super old "steamboat willie" movies would be out of copyright, but Mickey Mouse would still be a trademark.

In addition, Mickey Mouse is perfectly legal to use in works of parody etc

I love it!

Thanks, all appropriate submissions are very welcome, please tell your friends about it
