Dialing into BBSs at 11-13 years old, making ANSI art, downloading shareware games, and playing MUDs was so much fun, and makes me so nostalgic.

I don’t know what the equivalent is for todays kids. Maybe Roblox or Minecraft.

Younger-ish person here:

The things you describe sound more bleeding edge and free-form than the combo of bukkit servers, skype, and flash games I was messing with around that time yet in their ends they kinda did the same thing. Setting up my own bukkit server and port-fowarding it for friends was probably the most technically involved thing I managed to set up around that age short of bricking an early android phone when I first discovered XDA-developers was a thing (ouch).

The things I see kids doing now are impressive. For every spam tabloid story I see of a kid being stumped by windows explorer I see another kid making youtube videos of how they pmprovised a (bad) vr setup out of a google cardboad and an xbox 360 kinect. Kids these days armed with video tutorials scare me but so do the platforms that actively try to court them...

Honestly I have no idea what the "kids these days" use as their ends for this same kind of stuff, java minecraft and discord, though I notice the kids that do care about computers seem to be getting steam accounts earlier and earlier which is wild to me.

Sustained profitable growth for nearly 24 years is the exception, not the rule.

> “so many people are apathetic to the atrocities commited by Google.”

Maybe so many people simply don’t view these as “atrocities”? Your wording suggests a privileged life, and ignorance of the practices of the vast majority of companies in the US, abroad, and throughout history. This is particularly true if Google is your idea of a company that treats its employees poorly, to the point that this almost must be taken as parody.

EDIT: Ah, it seems that spreading pro-Amazon, anti-Google sentiment is your main purpose here on HN. A short sample of recent posts:

> Apple and Amazon are adding real values to the economy and making positive contribution to society. Google and Meta are parasites

> I wonder if this bugs exists on FireOS. It's obvious that bugs like this will happen in a spyware company product like Google.

> I wish everyone would start using Twitch, so that we can have a proper alternative of Google/Youtube.

> Everyone should move to Twitch and make it a proper alternative to Youtube. I trust Amazon way more than an ad company like Google.

> Thank you for posting this. Moreover Google is a spyware company that holds users hostages for money. I wish Twitch can replace Youtube someday.

> I really wish Amazon would take charge of the internet infrastructure. I prefer customer obsessed infrastructure Amazon than spyware and adware companies like Google and Meta.

> This is outrageous. We need to find a way to stop Google. Google invades our privacy. Google holds us hostages for more money.

> I wish people would use Twitch more to make it a more viable Youtube alternative. Amazon doesn't have user hostile attitude like Google.

> I wouldn't trust any Google hardware - decomissioned or not. You don't know what kind of spyware they are running on their hardware.

> Exactly. IDK how people can use Google software. You never know when they will quietly inserts some spyware or adware into their so called open source software.

> Amazon is an amazing customer focus company. Google is a spyware company that only wants to make more by invading our privacy. Of course Amazon products will be better than Google.

And so on and so on. Very strange.

EDIT 2: Even more egregious, your submissions: https://news.ycombinator.com/submitted?id=johndfsgdgdfg

The same way money is often repaid: take it from future income.

The Democratic committees raised $853M in the 2022 election cycle, compared to $805M for the Republicans. If they had to deduct $50M next cycle to account for the illegitimate funds, it wouldn’t ruin them.

This sometimes does happen.

Elizabeth Warren gave back money she got from the Sackler family (owners of Purdue Pharma and primary operators of the opioid crisis).

The Sacklers donated mostly to Republicans, but AFAIK none of them returned the money.

They’ll be among the few tech employees whose equity didn’t get decimated this year.

n=2, I was on the fence about a 4th shot, but decided on a whim to get it. No side effects previously, but this one gave me full bodies aches and extreme fatigue for about 36 hours.

“Sure, we’re moving in the wrong direction, but at least we’re not as bad as those guys yet” isn’t that comforting.

“who were already dealt a pretty crummy hand”

Which is it?

> the abysmal dating prospects

It really is bad, right, and not my imagination? I feel like I’ve wasted a decade of my life here on an endless string of bad first dates with no mutual attraction.

It wasn’t like that in other places I’ve lived. I mentioned this to a family member recently, and they said it’s harder because I’m getting older. That’s probably true, but I swear it’s rough in this city.

It’s a bit like buying a house here: you spend a huge amount of time, effort, and money, and end up with less than you’d get back home.

Hope NYC worked out better for you.

> I feel like I’ve wasted a decade of my life here on an endless string of bad first dates with no mutual attraction.

This was a top3 for leaving. I realized that in the same way my politics are not welcome in the company I work for, so I just disengaged, the politics of SF made me an unwelcome, unwanted form of "diversity". So I left, along with all my tax burden, cultural contributions, and normally positive nature.

I found I had to put in more work to get similar results, from a place that was known to be 'easy' (in hindsight) to a place known to be hard. I found someone in about a year, and although they might not be 'the best', I do love them a lot and we have been together for a long time. Sometimes I wonder if I should've kept on dating sometimes although.

> they might not be 'the best'

The pursuit of the "the best" is one of the most toxic parts of Bay area culture. In want of the "the best" I've seen people double/triple book themselves for events so they can flake on 2 and go to the one they want in the moment. I've seen people endlessly date, permanently unsatisfied with every human they encounter (if you can have 100 dates in 2 yrs and no one lives up to your standards, high probability thats more about you than them). In pursuit of "the best" people undermine eachother at work, and fail to keep their words. On and on it goes.

Jesus, I hope your partner doesn’t read HN.

If you’re telling everyone here, I hope your partner feels the same way, and they know you feel this way.

If not, I hope you can get over your FOMO, or just keep searching for this imaginary ‘best’ partner that may or may not exist.

When it comes to remote work, WFH, and WFO, and realized that I do like working from an office, just not if it requires living in the Bay Area. It’s way, way too overpriced if you want to own a home here, and the marginally higher Bay Area compensation is washed away once you’re in the market to buy a house.

So my personal preference is (1) WFO for a Bay Area company in a non-Bay Area office to combine good comp and good quality of life, (2) WFH remotely, (3) WFO in the Bay Area, and lastly (4) WFH in the Bay Area.

unless you are rich, living in the bay area with a family is living in constant stress. Bay area is good in your 20's but i've noticed these days a-lot of people move out once they are in their 30's and ready to start a family. Why would i live in a third world slum dwelling for 1.5 million (and probably have to send my kids to private school), and live in a constant state of "if i lose my job, then i'm screwed", when i could make a bay area salary and live in a mid col city. The only advantage in terms of career was maybe working with and seeing your coworkers but most of them never even come in to the office.

Judging by elite college representation

Elite college representation is a poor metric because of legacy admissions, influence of donors, and the reported efforts to limit Asian admissions.

Look at schools with more merit-based admissions (MIT, Caltech, etc.). Asians are overrepresented to a much higher degree.
