Quick question: Why would you need Xpra for this, or what are the advantages of Xpra over normal X forwarding?

x can't run untrusted applications; it trusts everything

any x application can spy on everything you're doing in other windows, send them messages, inject other windows into them, delete them, and post ui events to them. basically with very few exceptions any x application has total control over your account

xpra has other benefits (lower network bandwidth usage, being able to reconnect after network outages, being able to move an app from one display device to another) but that's not what the grandparent comment is talking about

I wonder what is the appeal of these systems, today? On what demand would one chose a POWER system like this one (which I think it's pretty cool) over a, say, more standard X86 or ARM server?

Raptor's big selling point is open source firmware. There's not a single bit of closed source software anywhere on their system. It's why they don't have any POWER 10 systems.

What if you are running a long running and important process and your personal internet connection drops, killing your process? That's why I am fond of screen and tmux

That’s valid, but how often does it happen? It never happened to me. Long running jobs are easy with a cron job:

echo "/path/to/long_process.sh" | at now + 1 minute

And it adds the benefit to simply call that script again, if you need the same long process again.

I think cannabis is a great harm reduction tool, compared to harder and more dangerous drugs like Alcohol, Heroin, etc. It is truly a blessing compared to those.

But there is an aura of "harmlessness" going around it and I think it is detrimental to public health, because people think it is okay to smoke weed everyday all day long - the same people that will condemn "daily drinking" as it should be condemned (as a terrible, health wreaking habit).

Many people, including me in the past, use or have used something (food? drugs? you know your shit) as a daily coping mechanism to "issues" or "stuff". If that's your case, seeking help and changing your environment the best way you can is way better than sweeping it all under the rug with a daily something that makes it all good for some hours, and then you refill. It takes fortitude to step up and change, but you can do it if you change your frame of mind. I'm rooting for your change out there.

I have no issues with cannabis at all and I think it's way, way superior as a chill out, relaxation thing than alcohol. But I also think that daily "wake and bake" could be a sign that something is off, so please be mindful of your surroundings, environment, and listen to how you feel.

My hope is the rescheduling will permit proper research into the pros/cons so we have a better idea of all this. It's hard to do most clinical trials on a Schedule 1 substance.

I think this is a cool concept, and all, but honestly, at this point, why just not use Python3 as your project's scripting language, and reap all the benefits of a simple, typesafe/autocomplete ready language with broad IDE support, and no intermediate 'compile step' which generates "don't touch" code?

Because the project might require a script that is delivered to many Linux servers with less dependencies and not having to install a new language.

I can see some very niche cases where an embedded system has bash not much else and "taking the most you can out of bash" could end up being useful.

besides that? probably nothing.

Can't read the article because blocked in my country (Brazil) for some reason (legal demands) ;-(

Not really. I wish I had:

- that much drive

and

- that much time to sink into pleasurable (useful or not) endeavor

watching people talk about something they have a passion in (whatever that topic might be) is really interesting to me

I was extremely confused on why an IaC solution/package company would have a leg on the natural gas business lol

Senior Backend Engineer interested in freelancing and consulting in my spare time (approx ~8-10hr/week). I have been using computers for the last 30 years, with a deep understanding of how internals work, and I approach problem-solving meticulously.

Give me your hard problems, and I'll crack them for you, providing a stable and dependable solution path.

I don't like creating crufty/hacky stuff just to tick checkboxes or guarantee a paycheck. I've been programming since the days of Turbo Pascal 6.0, and I genuinely enjoy what I do; it's a passion for me, not just a money grab. If you need someone who will do it right, I'm your guy (I have references, should you need them).

I am also a firm believer in "radical candor" and will be a no-bullshit, stable, direct communicator at all times. Anyone has opinions on this versus "Dhall"?

Dhall seems to be explicitly total (non-turing complete) while Pkl seems to be Turing Complete, hence dangerous as you can basically compute anything

I don’t mind the Turing completeness. Sometimes you need it to effectively represent a problem.
