I don’t think you can generalize anecdotes to apply to a nationality.

This is an oversimplification. One should of course take great care not to use generalizations to promote group-based hatred, but this is in addition to the fact that it would be naive (and impossibly restrictive) to declare nationality generalization forbidden. Nationalities, cultures, and many other set-formings of humans have salient features, on average, for better or worse.

Acknowledging the nuance on this issue is hard, because a lot of people will call you a literal nazi for doing so. But that is a position which, ultimately, entirely denies the existence of culture as a concept.

You’re ignoring the context of my comment. They’re implying that Indians are second-rate engineers, not that they have a cuisine that uses lots of spices.

“Meth” is methamphetamine, not methylphenidate. Ritalin isn’t the same thing as Meth. Not sure about how Ritalin vs Adderall act different on dopamine.

Then why does it have meth in the name genius?

<spiderman J Jonah Jameson meme> You're kidding, right? </spidey-meme>

“Don’t call me a homo sapien! I’m not gay!”

Leave it to the peanut gallery to always assume the vulgar definition.

I think a system that makes it this easy to shoot yourself in the foot is probably not a great system. Documentation is important, and I'm glad it's clear and obvious, but humans make mistakes. You'd hope that the mistakes have less dire consequences.

out of curiosity, what was your prior car?

'05 Ford Focus with a 5-speed manual. My first, and unfortunately last manual transmission. It had the sporty red trim interior and I replaced the CD changer with an android head unit and gave it a matching red theme.

Then I wrecked it, and the cops stole it by forcibly towing it to one of those scam tow yards that charge $500 a day. I had to bribe the guy at the yard just to get my personal belongings out of it.

Fuck that, I'm sorry to hear it.

Bit of a shameless plug, but I wrote about how Etsy migrated to TypeScript a few years back. I agree with the author generally: TS strict mode is the way to go, and you may find yourself regretting the alternative, even if it sounds appealing. It takes a lot of work, but most of the effort ended up being:

1. writing types for the big, central libraries that everyone uses (and make them "smart enough" to infer as much as possible).

2. teaching everyone at the company a brand new language without them hating it, and without their team losing (much) velocity.

I think that assumes a lot about what people do in the winter. I do most of my running in the winter because the summers are too hot to run, for instance.

Yes, it’s obviously a generalization. All else equal, the summer days are longer and the people are less lethargic.

This site gets better and better. Beyond even the mapping of genres, the write-ups for each genre are gold. Read the one for "Noise" if you're looking for somewhere fun to start.

The fact that this exists has rekindled my hope for new, mass-manufactured 35mm cameras. There are plenty of good used ones around, but repairs can be so expensive (if you can find someone willing to service your camera).

I'm reading "The Creative Act" by Rick Rubin. It's been such a wonderful perspective shift on what it means to be creative, and it includes a ton of lovely insights on the process of being creative itself. I can't recommend it enough.

I'm working on an app called ScreenHint. It lets you take a screenshot of a bit of your screen, which then floats there above your other windows until you dismiss it. It's essentially a clone of the sadly-abandoned Snappy, if you're familiar with it. There are a lot of things I wish it could do still, but I'm worried that I'm missing some ease-of-use and polish items still. The app is free and is currently on the mac app store, but I haven't really done much to promote it yet.

This is great - it drives me crazy that the native MacOS screenshot only hovers for 2-3 seconds before disappearing.
