I was turned off by the non-conversational tone of his writing and didn't get beyond the first three or four paragraphs. The sentences are long and pausing constantly with unnecessary commas. This is exactly the kind of writing I am trying to get away from, so I'm not interested in taking advice from someone who does this.

The optimist in me would like to believe that we are still in a "Napster" world in terms of content, and we will eventually get back to a more bit torrent centric environment - what we lack is a killer UI that me, my kids, and mother-in-law will all use.

Apple products have always been built with a Walled Garden approach, so nothing new here. The same ios software/hardware combo has always been fully controlled by Apple.

We know that if speed is your goal there are tradeoffs you will have to deal with, such as inline images and css that are harder to maintain. This is a well known architectural tradeoff (along with usability vs security). If you are willing to pay for your load speed in the form of increased page complexity and reduced scalability, this is a legitimate option.

Thanks to Minecraft, I expect a whole new batch of Java developers over the next several years.

Didn't it get ported after MS bought it?

It got ported for Consoles/Mobile. Porting the PC version would cause every existing mod to stop working, which would be huge, I can't think of a single person I know who plays stock Minecraft.

It also got ported for Windows, that's why it is in "beta" for now at Windows Store. It's being rewritten in C++.

I agree. I felt the same about Meddle. I think the whole article kind of read like a nostalgia piece
