Had a delivery yesterday where the driver (Evri) had to wave his handheld around for a bit, as it wouldnt let him confim delivery as it thought he was 100m down the road!

Evri / Hermes have got their act together recently. Least unreliable delivery company.

They're called that because they fuck up Evri delivery.

"Your parcel is on the way."

"Your parcel is being used as a football by the warehouse staff."

"Your parcel is in Antarctica."

"Your parcel has somehow been delivered to your roof."

Genuine question: When have you ever heard Hoi Polloi being used without being preceded by "the" ? Seems to universally be used as "the hoi polloi" (albeit, in English)

>But how can such person be considered boring?

Consider a continuum from Boring to Exciting. Now place these jobs on them:

- Firefighter

- Rocket Scientist

- Data Analyst

They are more boring, ergo, they are the boring jobs.

Isn't "boring" also a function of "would I see myself doing this?"?

People don't seem to find being an Uber driver boring, because you talk to people all day. This sounds extremely boring and tiresome to me.

I think that HRM data from watches is indicative at best and is never going to be as accurate as a decent chest monitor, let alone a nurse with professional training!

For me, these devices are good to spot trends over time, (eg "how has my resting heartrate improved after 4 weeks of being more physically active?") rather than comparing my data to someone else's.

I'm not sure it was meant to be a tax on the rich; It was initially introduced in 1923 to cover radio broadcasts, and widened to become the television license in 1946.

Also, the appeal of this funding model makes it independent of Governmental cuts and the politicisation of programming.

Speed limits have no minimum because driving on a road is situational; bad weather, unfamiliarity with the road, new driver, bad driver, personal safety limits, discrepancy in speedometers, and etc.

How would you go about policing this? If there is traffic, everyone is driving under the minimum!

Most states have a blanket law that 10/15/20 below the speed limit constitutes obstructing traffic and is usually a ticketable offense.

In the digital age with sensors and data so cheap there's also no reason we can't set speed limits based on the Xth percentile everywhere with an automatic annual adjustment.

People tend to have an aversion to automation applied to law enforcement. See the criticism of red light cameras in the US.

I'm advocating for automating the rules, not the enforcement. In most places speed limits would probably rise. My understanding is that some traffic light timings are already automated in this manner.

After rereading your comment I see where I misread, my apologies.

By definition, x percent of the people are below the xth percentile. That’s not a sane way to set limits

That sounds like a pretty sane way to set a limit that by definition should not be exceeded.

It's also the way civil engineers recommend speed limits be set. I think the current number they use is 85th percentile.

Yes, California for example:

> The 85th percentile speed is the single most influential indicator of what is safe and reasonable, and it is used to determine the speed limit by rounding to the nearest 5 mph increment, and posting the speed limit at that speed. If there are sufficient conditions not readily apparent to the driver, as determined by a registered engineer, the posted speed limit can be lowered by 5 mph, and such a decision must be clearly documented in the E&TS.

Ya, let’s implement speed limits based upon an known organizational issue that can result in catastrophic failure. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normalization_of_deviance

There are posted speed minimums on the tollways here in Chicago. You can't go below 45 in freeflowing traffic.

Explain that to all the people trying to merge at 35.

I have no problem with semi trucks, overloaded scrap haulers, genuine shitboxes that can't floor it without something slipping and whatnot merging at low speeds. Everyone else has no excuse.

Those vehicles shouldn't be allowed on freeways in the first place. They can use surface streets.

Stateside, many interstates have minimum speeds listed.

Perhaps GPs use of of the term "occupation" skewed this but I dont think we're talking about weaving and textile _Jobs_ here, but rather traditional craftwork eg embroidery, patchwork, quilting, knitting, smocking etc.

Women have always run the household and as GP mentioned these activities can be picked up and put down as time allows. With very small children especially, this time is often vary rare to find..!

Whoops. Thanks. Although I can't seem to edit now!

  > ... not looking at the schema ...
Wait, you just guessed the table names? what am i missing here?

probably means looked at SELECT * from each table and interpreted the FK relationships vs. querying the schema table or looking at the ERD...

Many here seem to cite this article as being low on fact, and high on emotions.

It is worth noting that this is merely the introduction piece to a series of articles that the Guardian seem to be running this week[1].

It's intention _is_ to be brief.
