[flagged] Turns out no one can compete with Elon Musks Twitter (businessinsider.com)

Translation: "My favorite celebrities and brands haven't left so I feel lonely everywhere else"

I have carefully picked the people I follow on Twitter (mostly scientists and CS people) so the feed is ok but every time I try to use it for recent news/events, it's so full of spam it's unusable.

I like the community notes feature but it doesn't show up that much. Separately I dislike the fact that Elon asked the staff to make exception for his account when it comes to ranking decisions. That's ridiculous.

Probably @threads.net becoming a "full" Mastodon instance (and in Europe too) will make a difference in the current situation.

Bluesky is thriving! They mentioned it one time, just to say that Jack quit, and nothing more. But don't sleep on Bluesky...

Mastodon is fine outside the mastodon.social bubble. Hundreds of thousands of people to talk to is PLENTY.

The company Twitter was a mess before acquisition and is a mess after Trump bought it.

It's essentially a ring where rich and famous people try and dunk on each other but turns out advertisers don't like this sort of thing because maybe it's too inflammatory or the dunking distracts people from the potential product being advertised nearby.

The only thing that his purchase caused was that Musk became a sort of Dana White of the Internet, or Vince McMahon rather.

Plus all the people who think there are two kinds of people and it’s really important that everyone know what kind of person you are. Who wants to advertise against that?

The advertising situation got worse after the buyout.

moats are huge deal, and to some extent, priceless. it's why these profitless start-ups are sometimes valued so richly. Look how much $ Microsoft burned over the past 20 years competing against Google.
