I can't get over the idea that this is a bunch of people who were angry their favorite proprietary systems got killed by open standards and, ultimately, open source. Compatibility and not being dependent on a single company are good things!

When the book was written most of the UNIX world was proprietary too, GNU and BSD existed but were marginal.

X was a partial example. It did kill NeWS thanks to being open and Sun not willing to open it up.
