As opposed to working in the UK government, where Charles is king.

A previous employer of mine established promotion guidelines based on the scope of someone's impact - individual, team, department, company, industry. But they never specified the direction of the impact.


There are so many ways for "impact" to go wrong during promotions and performance reviews.

I think my favorite were projects that just didn't have any metrics. Or that claimed to have metrics, but somehow they were never shared...
