Not to say that running a search engine is anything resembling cheap or easy...but we're talking Microsoft (not exactly short on cash or technical talent). And they've been running Bing for >13 years now.
You gotta wonder if there's some dirty handshake deal between MS and Alphabet, under which Bing is kept too crappy to be a meaningful threat to Google's near-monopoly market share, and Alphabet does MS some similar favors in return.
