Because they used to be easier. I made a post on this elsewhere in this thread.

For installing applications: Apple used to place a stack for the Applications folder in your Dock by default, and you'd use that stack to launch any applications that weren't already in your Dock. It was natural that you'd install new applications by dragging them to the same place you launched them.
