It's a good thing CloudVolumes (aka SnapVolumes, basically VM-side volume unioning for VDI and server app containers a-la Softricity) sold to VMware when they did about 2 years ago. The core idea of app executables and libraries as opaque, read-only containers which can be shared at the enterprise scale is a good abstraction for many reasons including security and dedupe.
